IDW Infestation 2 Preview!

By Chuck Suffel

I was privileged to (virtually) attend an IDW Press Event today where Chris Ryall (Chief Creative Officer and Editor-in-Chief @ IDW) and Bobby Curnow (long time Editor @ IDW) announced their second mega ultra huge crossover event!

INFESTATION 2!

Spanning four months and totaling thirteen issues (though I only count 12, hmm), it’s bigger than last time it’s freakier than last time, it’s Elder Gods! Yes ladies and gentleman the Lovecraftian terrors are coming to the IDW universe! And they’ll be attacking some of your favorite worlds. After the events of Infestation 1 the barriers between realities have been weakened allowing the Elder Gods to cross over to wreak havoc on the worlds of The Transformers, G.I. Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, 30 Days of Night and Dungeons and Dragons! And by the way, this crossover is considered in continuity!

It all begins with Infestation 2 #1 in January (1/25/12) written by Duane Swierczynski and drawn by David Messina. Duane is the story architect for this event, it was his job to take all  the disparate universes and come up with a way for this invasion to work. He places the CVO (Covert Vampire Operations) team first in line to take on the Lovecraftian threat but they’re in way over there heads. Expect one hell of a cliff hanger in issue 1.

Next book out is Infestation 2: TRANSFORMERS #1 (2/1/12) & #2 (2/15/11) written by Chuck Dixon with art by Guido Guidi. It takes place in the Hearts of Steel Continuity, Steampunk Transformers! So I’m expecting some big gross tentacled monster on big tough robot action! Look out for historical characters appearing in this one, they let slip that Thomas Edison is one but not the most exciting one…

Alternating weekly with Transformers #1 and #2 we have Infestation 2: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: Eberron #1 (2/8/12) & #2 (2/22/12). Written by Paul Crilley (who has written several Eberron books) with art from Valerio Schiti, cover by Menton Matthews. Introducing for the first time in comics The Eberron Campaign! According to the Eberron wiki: “Eberron combines a fantasy tone with pulp and dark adventure elements, and some non-traditional fantasy technologies such as trains, skyships, and mechanical beings which are all powered by magic.” and it’s that magic aspect that they want to capitalize on for this story as Bobby Curnow said “less swords and more sorcery and black magic that ties in very well with Lovecraft”.

In the midst of all this maddening horror we have Infestation – Team Up (2/29/12) written by Chris Ryall, art by Alan Robinson and cover by Eric Powell. Featuring Archie (Groom Lake) and Batboy (Weekly World News) this is the breather book, our two characters hang out and poke fun at “Event” comics.

March begins with Infestation 2: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (3/7/12) & #2 (3/21/12) TMNT fan favorite Tristan Jones writer & Mark Torres art, cover Livio Ramondelli. Taking place in the sewers of NYC (of course) we’re promised a dark and creepy tale of disappearing Con Ed workers and weird creature sightings in the deep dark tunnels, deeper than the Turtles have gone before.

Also in March Infestation 2: G.I. JOE #1 (3/14/12) & #2 (3/28/11) written by Mike Raicht (Stuff of Legend), art by Valentine De Landro (X-Factor), cover Valentine De Landro. One of the most highly anticipated chapters in the story the arc the cover alone is worth picking this one up. Cobra uncovers a hidden relic that begins driving people insane and only the previously insane can resist it’s influence. Crystal Ball, Storm Shadow and Interrogator form a team with some of the Cobra insane asylum inmates to face this threat. Will any of our favorite Joe’s be involved? We’ll have to wait and see! Bobby Curnow says “a cross between One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and your favorite horror movie”.

The second one-shot is 30 Days of Night (4/4/12) written by Duane Swierczynski with Stuart Sayger supplying the art. How will the 30 Days vampires handle something this big and mean invading their hunting grounds? Duane takes us to the North Pole to find out. I’m looking forward to a bloody epic knockdown drag out battle in this one, and I’m probably right because it’s followed by…

Infestation 2 #2 (4/11/12) also written by Duane Swierczynski and drawn by David Messina. The second bookend title, this is where it all wraps up. This is also where some cool character crossovers should popup. We all know the publishers always say after this event nothing will ever be the same. Well we were assured today that things will actually be changed by this event and some of those changes may be very surprising.

There are a couple of neat incentives in this event. Interconnected covers, every licensed book is going to have the tentacled background drawn and painted by Livio Ramondelli. Put them all side by side and all the different licensed characters (drawn by the interior artists) will be standing side by side.

Also temporary tattoos!

Ask your LCS about the Infestation 2 ashcan that should be in shops this week. It’ll have a four page preview of Infestation 2 #1 as well as a timeline of all the issues being released and info on all the series that are involved.

Please feel free to ask questions in the comments, there was so much info I know I haven’t gotten to it all!

The Original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Return!

The Original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Make a Triumphant Return to Comics!

New “Heroes on a Half-Shell” Series Debuts in August
with TMNT Co-Creator, Kevin Eastman

Starting in August, IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will kick off with a brand new installment of the original series, led by Eastman and co-writer Tom Waltz (Silent Hill: Past Life, Infestation: Outbreak). Phenomenal new-comer Dan Duncan will bring the Turtles to life with dynamic interior art, while Sam Kieth and Walter Simonson provide eye-catching covers for issues one and two, respectively. Eastman will also provide layouts for Duncan‘s art, as well as variant covers.

This first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series will feature new and exciting storylines that maintain the “turtle power” core beloved by millions of fans. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael reunite to bring their ninja aptitude and teenage attitude in these all-new, action-packed adventures based on the original series. The first story arc will tell the origin story of the Turtles and introduce a new villain, the fearsome mutant alley cat, Old Hob. Featuring a cast of familiar characters, including Master Splinter, April O’Neill, Casey Jones, and true to the spirit of the original comics created by Eastman and Peter Laird, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are bigger and badder than ever, and ready to rock old and new fans alike.

IDW and Nickelodeon have a long-term partnership to offer an all-new installment of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and graphic novels. IDW’s new comics are part of a larger initiative to bring Turtles to a new generation of fans, starting with these new storylines from the original series that recapture the magic of the original Turtles comics. Additionally, in fourth quarter 2012, Nickelodeon will premiere a new CG-animated version of the wildly popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.

the Comics Corner: C2E2

by Ryan Porter

Welcome to the Comics Corner!  This week the Pop Culture Network is heading to Chicago for C2E2!  So forget the Top of the Stack, we’ll be at the top of the Willis Tower.  And looking down you might notice a serious lack of superheroes.  What’s with that?  DC Heroes live in there own fictitious cities and Marvel Heroes almost exclusively call New York City home.  Even if you consider Oprah a superhero, she’s retiring.  So this week, in honor of C2E2, we’ve got a small list of heroes that I think should consider a move to Windy City!  So come inside the Chicago-centric Comics Corner!

Simply plucking a hero from one city and transplanting them into another is not as easy as it might sound.  Several heroes, perhaps most notably Batman, are defined by the city they protect and are as much a part of the city as any building or landmark.  And despite the overwhelming number of Marvel heroes that call New York City home there are those that should absolutely remain there.  For heroes like Spider-Man and Daredevil New York City is a defining characteristic.

So why is there no love for Chicago? Even the Great Lakes Avengers passed by the Second City and called Wisconsin home.  And the 50 State Initiative during Civil War skipped over Illinois with little more than a passing reference and no indication of what heroes made up the team.  Naturally some may view Chicago as a step down, maybe taking the ‘Second City’ nickname too literally, but it’s certainly a town worthy of a superhero presence.  So without further ado, here are but a few suggestions:

http://www.asitecalledfred.com/comics101/images/2004/oct6/booster.jpg

Booster Gold: The loveable loser of the Justice League International who carries much personal tragedy and is constantly battling a ‘screw-up’ reputation despite his best intentions and a loyal fan base – both in universe and in fandom.  Sounds an awful lot like the Chicago Cubs doesn’t it?  Booster is an athlete from the 25th century and Chicago is one of the prime sports cities of this century.  I doubt even being from the 25th century Booster knows a Cubs team that has ever won the World Series.  What better way for a hero to rebuild his reputation and prove himself to his peers than by moving to a city without any super heroic competition?  As a big city with a definite Midwestern, blue-collar attitude the city of Chicago would certainly embrace a hard-working superhero on the comeback trail – especially Cubs fans.

Captain America (Bucky Barnes): While this choice may not help fight the notion that Chicago isn’t for the prime-time players, Steve Rogers is America’s top cop right now and he can’t stay in one place.  Bucky is the current Captain America and Chicago should be on his radar for several reasons.  Personally, Bucky has to rebuild his image.  Recently put on trial for his actions during his time as the Winter Soldier, Bucky needs to start making things right.  Even if Chicago is simply stop number one on a nation-wide redemption tour.  When you consider that the current President of the United States is from Chicago and given that the city has an infamous reputation for political corruption the question soon changes to: why wasn’t Captain America there already?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: I discussed in the intro that removing a hero from a city that defines them is no easy task.  More than any of the other heroes on this list the Turtles our bonded to their respective city, New York.  But a change is certainly possible and when it comes to teenagers, it’s almost inevitable.  Eventually these brothers are going to have to leave the Rat’s nest and Chicago would be the perfect destination for the green teens.  For the sake of my list I’m going to assume that the Turtles are fresh water turtles and would be much more comfortable in Lake Michigan than the Atlantic.  My assumption is based on the fact that before their mutation they belong to a little boy, and no little boy could handle the maintenance of a saltwater tank!  Anyway, Chicago’s got plenty of buildings both tall and small, a world class aquarium should my fresh water hypothesis be wrong and plenty of subway tunnels and sewers.  But perhaps most importantly as these heroes on the half shell grow up so will their taste in pizza and that means eating pizza the way it was meant to be eaten: deep dish style!

http://media.sfx.co.uk/files/2011/02/100211fantastic-four.jpg

The Fantastic Four: Granted, they are four no more but if we still call Lynyrd Skynyrd Lynyrd Skynyrd, I think it’s safe to still call them the Fantastic Four.  And for that reason, the loss of Johnny, I think it’s time for a change.  The team, or rather the family, is moving on and currently find themselves at the beginning of a new era.  What better why to symbolize that than with a move to another city away from the crisis-a-minute world of Marvel’s New York City?  This will allow them to start over, build up the Future Foundation and Ben will have plenty to occupy his mind when he’s not fighting Dr. Doom or the Male Man with the previously mentioned pizza and sports.  The last piece of the puzzle is the Baxter Building itself.  Truly the one thing that links the Fantastic Four to the city of New York more than anything else; with apologies to the Yancy Street Gang.  However if Dr. Doom was able to find a way to launch the Baxter Building into outer space than certainly Reed Richards can find a way to move their impressive home to Chicago.

So there it is.  A short list of potential new heroes who might want to consider calling Chicago home once Oprah calls it quits.  Will asking heroes to come to the Windy City turn the city itself into a more attractive target for super villains?  Probably, but without them there wouldn’t be any comic books at all, be it Chicago or anywhere else.  If anyone has any suggestions on more I’m all ears so head on over to the Pop Culture Network forum and sound off.  In the meantime we’ll see in Chicago at C2E2 this weekend!
