Top 15 The Walking Dead Comic Book Moments of 2017

2017 has been an awesome year for The Walking Dead comic series and there was many great moments that came out from the issues. Today i will rank the top 15 moments of 2017 from The Walking Dead comic series. If you have not caught up to issues 162-174 or volumes 27-29, there are major spoilers below.

15. The Debut of The Princess (#171: Fear The Princess)

New character introductions in the universe of The Walking Dead can be a hit or miss but this one is obviously a mix bag. While some members were traveling to Ohio, they reached Philadelphia to see it empty but to only find this character. The Princess claimed that she has not seen a living person in one year and she comes off as very talkative and jittery. I can see why since i would most likely snap if i did not see one person for a year. I would love to see Rick’s reaction once he sees her in the future.

14. Beta’s unexpected return (#172: Hilltop Reborn)

Everyone has wondered what has happened to Beta after The Whisperer War ended earlier this year and when would he return. He returned on the end of this issue in a jump scare moment that even caught me off guard. While Jesus and Aaron were setting camp for the night, Beta sneakily approaches Jesus from behind as he is ready to attack.

13. Siddiq’s Confession (#170: On The Road)

Since Rosita was killed back in issue #144, there was speculation that Eugene’s baby was not his. By the end of this issue, Siddiq admitted that he fell in love with her before she died. This enraged Eugene as he did not think that she cheated on him before she died and this caused a rift between Siddiq and Eugene in the next issue.

12: Sherry’s Death (#166: No Surrender)

Rick and Sherry had a debate about Rick’s leadership and their state with The Saviors ever since Negan was dethroned. Things got heated during the debate and then Sherry attacked Rick. Rick then pushed her back into the table which caused her neck to be snapped as she died right after. You can tell that Dwight will not be happy about this.

11: The Saviors’ attempted uprising (#165: Opportunity)

While everyone in Alexandria were steering the megaherd away from their community, The Saviors showed up (lead by Sherry) to announce that they will no longer be part of the connection with other communities. Dwight tried to convince his ex-wife and The Saviors to stand down, but a fight between him and John happened. This was a good moment because The Saviors have been mostly out of the spotlight since All Out War Part 2 ended a few years ago.

10: Empty Pittsburg (#170: On The Road)

Eugene and a few others decided to go to Ohio to see Stephanie who they have had contact through the radio for the last 15 or so issues. Their first pit stop was at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. We have not seen another state in quite a while in the universe of The Walking Dead so this was a treat for the readers. As soon as they arrived, they noticed that there is not one person there as it was a ghost town.

9: Mega Herd invades Alexandria again (#163: Conquered)

The ending of The Whisperer War showed us that Beta and the rest of The Whisperers released the mega herd that Alpha showed Rick back in issue #143. When Dwight and the rest return to Alexandria, Rick told them that there were not hundreds, but thousands of Walkers that will approach. This made me question why Rick did not tell his group about this before the war started. The mega herd invades alexandria and it is much worse this time than it is last time. Rick, Negan and the rest fought many of them while Michonne, Dwight, Andrea and others redirected many of them out of Alexandria.

8. Beta’s Death and identity along with The Whisperers (#173: Final Fight)

Many can argue that this should have happened earlier this year but i am happy that it has happened this way. After Beta tried to stab Jesus, they have a fight and Beta is shot by Aaron. When they unmasked him, it was revealed that he used to be a famous basket ball player and actor before the outbreak happened as both Jesus and Aaron recognized him. This explains why he was very tall and very quick whenever he fought someone. Also, the last remaining Whisperers finally met their demise.

7. Andrea has a walker bite (#165: Opportunity)

This happened at the same time as The Saviors’ attempted uprising as Andrea and the rest were still getting the mega herd away from Alexandria so you can imagine how chaotic it was to see it happen. While she was saving Eugene who was about to meet his demise as he was surrounded by the undead, Andrea saves him but during the scuffle, she somehow got bitten. Nobody knew it until the end of the issue as it remains one of the most shocking moments in The Walking Dead history.

6: Rick and Negan’s conversation (#164: A Fallen House)

Right when the mega herd invaded Alexandria, Negan and Rick went into one of the houses to shelter themselves while the Walkers were flooding the community. It is there where they both decided to have a conversation about their pasts. Negan brings up his ex wife and how he left her there to die and Negan has showed Rick that he is a changed man and that locking him up in a cell for a few years really taught him a lesson.

5. Maggie and Dante’s kiss (#174: A Solitary Life)

Ever since Dante was introduced, many readers thought that him and Maggie would get together. It took a few volumes but it has finally happened. It took Maggie years to move on from Glenn and she is finally able to trust another man. Lets see how this relationship goes in the future.

4. Stopped in Ohio (#173: Final Fight)

The group has traveled all the way from Washington, D.C and now they have finally arrived in Ohio. Eugene has been in contact with Stephanie for some time and we do not know if their group (called The Commonwealth) is good or bad. They were stopped by solders in this community and we will find out more about them when issue #175 New World Order begins in January.

3. Negan Stops The Saviors (#168: The Road’s End)

Right during The Saviors’ attempted uprising and after Sherry’s death, Negan steps in to set them straight. He also asks if they would like to go back to the old ways and only mark kneeled down and when he did, Negan punched him and gave all of The Saviors a speech about why they will never go back to the old ways along with making mention that because of Rick and everyone in all of the communities, they are still alive and trade supplies. This speech made the reader think that he has fully ditched his old ways.

2. Maggie and Negan’s closure (#174: A Solitary Life)

This is the moment i have been waiting for ever since Negan killed Glenn back in issue #100 back in 2012 so this is five years in the making. While Negan is alone and trying to make another bat with barbed wire (Lucille 2.0), Maggie stops him. They have a conversation about their former lovers and Negan apologizes for what he has done and all the pain he has caused her. Negan even wanted Maggie to kill him right there but she refused to do it as she wanted him to live knowing that she will never forget what happened and that she does not want to give what he wants.

1. Andrea’s Death (#167: A Certain Doom)

This is the biggest TWD comic character death since Glenn and this entire issue was an emotional roller coaster. After Andrea revealed the bite to Rick, everyone said their goodbyes to her as everyone was heartbroken this entire issue. Even Negan said his goodbye too. Rick was the last person to see Andrea alive as they both had a conversation before she died and reanimated into a Walker. Rick also had to be the one to put her down as it was hard for him to do it. This issue was so sad that Robert Kirkman did a tribute to her character at the end of the issue instead of the normal letter hacks.

Rhode Island Comic Con is one more week away.

One of the biggest events of the year is the annual Rhode Island Comic Con, a celebration of pop culture, Comics and video games and it is one week away where it will begin on Nov. 10-12 in downtown Providence.

Exclusive- NYCC 2017 Press Invited The Walking Dead Press Conference (Photos included)

I was invited to cover The Walking Dead press conference right before the panel started at New York Comic Con and i had a blast. The talent that were at the conference were Andrew Lincoln, Robert Kirkman, Greg Nicotero, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Austin Amellio, Norman Reedus, Tom Pane and much more. They all took turns answering questions and talking about how great it felt that the show has made it to 100 episodes.

Austin Amellio and Norman Reedus also gave a slight glimpse on what to expect between their characters (Dwight and Daryl Dixon) in season 8 of the show.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan also reacts to the death of Lucielle during The Whisperer War last year since it was one year ago this week that it has happened in the comic series.

Andrew Lincoln also talks about “Old Man Rick” as it was seen in the trailer that was released back in San Diego Comic Con and how he feels about the future of the series.

Greg Nicotero talks about his passion of directing the show from when he started to now along with the character development of select characters and he is very excited for the upcoming season.

NYCC 2017- Robert Kirkman panel notes

Today i attended the panel of The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirkman at New York Comic Con. It was really great and he was a comedian out there too as the fans loved it. He made a few announcements during the panel as well.

1. The Walking Dead issue 175 reveal

This one blew me away as i never expected to see something like this in TWD. It is part 1 of New World Order and we will be introduced to a very large and guarded community. It is in Ohio and it has been hyped up for almost two years since Eugene got the radio working almost two years ago when he heard a voice from there.

2. The last issues of Invincible

Next he showed the cover for Invincible #142, which has 10 extra pages of story. “It’s the End of All Things part 10 of 12…but if you look at the top it’s Robot Wars Part 1…I dare Marvel and DC to top that!”

“It’s going to be a big deal…me and Ryan [Ottley] are ending on a high note.”

He then showed the cover to Invincible #143, in which Mark finds out about “the kid he didn’t know about…it might be a little depressing.”

Kirkman then teased the cover to the 48-page Invincible #144, half-drawn by Ottley and half-drawn by Invincible co-creator Cory Walker. “When you guys read the end of Invincible you’ll go…holy crap there’s 117,000 different stories in this thing?!…It’s been a lot of fun.”

3. New comic series announced

This new series, Oblivion Song, will be published by Image Comics under Kirkman’s own company Skybound. He will be working alongside artist Lorenzo De Felici. Unlike the Walking Dead, this new story is not about our world overrun wcreator-owned Instead, this time the monsters are somewhere else and thousands of people are trapped there with them.

This is the official synopsis for the series:

A decade ago 300,000 citizens of Philadelphia were suddenly lost in Oblivion. The government made every attempt to recover them but after many years they gave up. Nathan Cole… won’t. He makes daily trips, risking his life to try and rescue those lost, alone and afraid, living in the apocalyptic hellscape of Oblivion. But maybe… Nathan is looking for something else? Why can’t he resist the siren call of the Oblivion Song?

There was also a trailer that was shown to the audience after he announced it.

AMC’s The Walking Dead Monopoly Review

It seems there is no end to Monopoly being re-branded by popular shows and what’s the current next big thing. Catering to nearly every fad there are literally hundreds of variations and that is just the known and official one’s alone.

So how many times can the brand re-brand before people do not want to buy it anymore or lose interest. Never it would seem. One of the latest examples of Television show inspired re-branded Monopoly sets is the extremely popular, The Walking Dead series. Being a huge fan of the TV show i was delighted to see this back at the Toy Fair NY a few months back, and now i can finally review it after getting a review sample.

I handled this set with care as i studied this beautifully designed box, taking caution get scratched, cut or bitten by the packaging. It looks just like it has jumped right out of the AMC series along with using pictures from the television show’s characters and key locations such as Rick’s house, Hershel’s barn, The Prison, Terminus, Alexandria, The Hilltop, The Kingdom, The Sanctuary and much more.

Monopoly Pieces

The amount of character pieces seems to vary throughout the variations of Monopoly sets. This version comes with six playable pieces. Carl’s Hat, Rick’s Python Revolver. a Katana (Michonne’s sword), Lucille (barbed wire wrapped around a bat), Daryl’s Crossbow and a Walker’s head.

The board as you expect is completely re worked to relate to the series apart from the four corner squares which would not be Monopoly without them. The classic GO, IN JAIL/JUST VISITING, FREE PARKING AND GO TO JAIL!

Chance and community chest have appropriately been renamed as Survivor and Walker Each card has a small image from the TV Show and like the original Monopoly, an event, command or a consequence, but with it’s own take to liaise with the series.

Houses and hotels are still available but these are now known as walls and guard towers. Appropriate to relate to the series.

This is a game I am very excited to play against friends with as playing by yourself isn’t as fun, and a lot of my friends are just as much as big a zombie fanatics as myself. Heck I may even get into character and be a bat swinging gun slinging mad man with only survival to fight for. And should I get turned I’d better not bite any friends as I would have no-one left to play this awesome game with.

My Thoughts for today on The Walking Dead: Cliffhangers

The problem isn’t cliffhangers as cliffhangers. It’s that this particular cliffhanger worked against the scene, rather than for it.

Look at the previous major cliffhangers:Rick being told something in secret adds mystery. If I hadn’t gotten into the show after playing the Telltale game, it would have been a really intriguing one.

After the farm falls, Rick has a different view of leadership, we see the prison that may become their new home, and Andrea met some lady with a cape and a freakin’ katana. I couldn’t wait to start season 3!

After the prison falls, they have survived their first major enemy, but their home is lost again and the group has scattered. I really looked forward to seeing how they met back up and how the group would change on this new arc

The group is reunited in the Termites’ prison. It’s their darkest moment, but seeing familiar faces, Rick is thinking “it’s US, of course we’ll make it out of this”. Awesome, pumped for the escape.

Alexandria may be falling, Rick’s group is using good-old zombie guts to escape. Then, the boy gets scared and says “Mommy?” I couldn’t wait to see the panic as the walker herd turned on them while they were surrounded and had nowhere to go. …the payoff was a total cop-out (what, did the walkers just not hear him?), but the cliffhanger itself did its job.

Negan attacking…someone. What I’m excited about in the next arc is seeing Rick dealing with his biggest defeat. They essentially just got conquered. This is the main attraction of the next arc, but the cliffhanger detracts from it in two ways: first, it lessens the impact of Rick’s despair because we don’t see who he lost; second, it puts the main focus of the premier on “who died?” rather than “how will they deal with their new warlord?”

If they were worried about the gore, there would have been better ways. They could have shown the first hit, then cut to the reaction of each of the others as we only hear the impact of the bat.

If they were worried about ratings……..they need new marketers.

Top 10 The Walking Dead Episodes

Season 5 of The Walking Dead has ended a few weeks ago and Season 6 is coming our way in October. Today, i will count down my favorite best episodes from The Walking Dead from Seasons 1-5.

10. What happened and what’s going on? (S5:E9)

Of all the episodes i have seen, this one caught me and the viewers off guard towards the ending. At the beginning of the episode, we are shown a grave being made for what we thought was for Beth along with flashbacks. During the episode, Tyreese, Noah, Rick, Glen and Michone went to the area where Noah used to live but to see that it has got overrun by Walkers. this also includes his family. Once Tyreese was alone with Noah, he was bitten and for most of the episode, we get to see hallucinations from his vision along with characters that were killed off. At the end of the episode, we get to find out that the grave from the beginning of the episode was actually for him since he is now dead. Talk about “the mind playing tricks on you”. This episode is a must see since the production and editing was so great that you would have not thought that he would die in the episode. Also to note, if you see any Walkers with an “W” carved into their heads along with the small wall with “Wolves not far” tagged onto it, save those for clues for the remainder of that season.

9. A (S4:E16)

The season 4 finale was a roller coaster for Rick, Michone, Carl and Daryl. First, the 3 of them encounter the claimers at the night as they were about to kill Rick and Rape Carl and Michone in retaliation for Rick killing one of them a few episodes prior. Daryl tries to reason with the claimers but then he gets assaulted. Rick, Michone and Daryl managed to get the upper hand along with Rick stabbing the last one of the claimers nearly 15 times for putting his hands on his son. later in the episode, they arrived at TERMINUS but to quickly find out that something is up when they noticed that their friend’s belongings are there. Gareth trapped Rick’s group after a gun battle and ordered them to go to an train cart labeled “A”. The good news is that Rick and his group reunited with the rest of the group but the bad news is that they are all captured and are being held in that one train cart.

8. Conquer (S5:E16)

The near 2 hour season 5 finale of The Walking Dead left with a bang and an cliffhanger. In the aftermath of the fight Pete and Rick had along with Rick being knocked out to his senses by Michone, Deanna and the rest of the residents of the Alexandria Safe Zone holds an meeting to decide whether if Rick gets kicked out from the Zone or he stays. Meanwhile, we get the first Appearance of the first members of The Wolves, Morgan saving Daryl and Aaron from a trap full of walkers, Nicholas attempting to kill Glen, and the last few minutes of the episode where Rick explains to Deanna and the residents that they need to be ready to survive. during this, Pete arrives with Michone’s sword and accidentally slashes Deanna’s husband. Deanna then told Rick to kill him and without hesitation and giving zero f***’s at all and in less than two seconds, he shoots his gun at Pete with one of the coldest looks i’ve ever seen Rick had. Morgan also meets Rick for the first time since season 3 in the final seconds of this episode as he saw Rick kill Pete.

7. Clear (S3:E12)

In this episode, Michonne, Rick, and Carl are on a supply run. During this, they stop at an small town that has traps for Walkers from one side to the end of the other side of the block. The group manages to get away from the traps until Rick and Morgan reunited for the first time since season 1. Morgan has changed as they both caught up on how have they been since they last seen each other but not in the matter of a normal reunion. Morgan revealed that his son has been eaten by Walkers. Also, Carl and Michonne spends time together as Carl wanted to go back to his old school to get a framed photo of his family. During this, we get major character development between them two especially for Michonne since her backstory was kind of a mystery for a while.

6. Pretty much dead already (S2:E7)

the first half of season two, the entire group is looking for Carol’s daughter, Sophia. After Rick told her to stay in an small area to kill off Walkers, she is no where to be seen when Rick returned. There were a few clues to where she was last at throughout the next few episodes until this episode. While the group takes out the Walkers inside of Hershel’s barn, there was one left and the final one was an zombified Sophia. everyone including myself was in stunned silence as we were all caught off guard for that reveal. Shane shoots her to put her down. Talk about a way to end an episode..

5. Days gone bye( S1:E1)

The first episode that started it all and showed us what we are getting too when we get that first shot of Rick putting down an Walker. Rick was shot during an arrest attempt and Shane took him to the hospital. He woke up a few months later after falling into an coma to find out that the hospital is empty and nearly destroyed. He also sees the Walkers for the first time and then escapes the hospital to see that the world he has known, has changed and roaming with Walkers. Rick eventually meets Morgan and his son for the first time as he gives him a brief up to date follow up on what is happening. Elsewhere, we get scenes of Shane, Lori (Rick’s wife), Carl, Dale and others as they try to survive as Rick goes out to look for his Wife and Daughter. What an way to start the series.

4. Them (S5:E10)

After the deaths of Tyreese and Beth, the group heads to Washington, DC. The group is very tired and are showing signs that they are fed up. especially the part where they have to get out of their cars and has no choice but to walk during an heatwave while Walkers are behind them but the group does not care to take them down. The group also finds an shed later in the day and has relief from the heat when it rains. Rick then gave his infamous “We are the walking dead” speech and then, a heard of Walkers comes to the shed and tries to break in. The entire group with all of their strength, prevents the Walkers from coming in. they did not come in due to a tree falling on them during the thunderstorm. This episode was a very powerful one and it told the story that they wont give up no matter what obstacle is in the way and to have hope that there is an place for the survivors.

3. Too far gone (S4:E8)

For the entire 3rd season and half of the 4th, the group makes an abandoned prison their home. it was attacked by The Governor and his group two times but the third attack was the one that got them out for good. The governor and Rick has an discussion and also, Michonne and Hershel were being held hostage. The Governor wanted to take the prison or else he will force their way in. Rick refused the deal and then The Governor threatened Hershel with Michonne’s sword. Rick tried to plead with The Governor and would want to try to work everything out. That was, until the words “liar” came out of The Governor’s mouth. He then slashed and decapitated Hershel as the gun battle begins along with the tank. Rick and Governor then goes into a deadly fistfight until Michonne pierced her sword into The Governor. He is my favorite TWD villain but his death was needed after he killed Hershel. The group escapes separately into smaller groups as Walkers begin to overrun the place.

2. No sanctuary (S5:E1) (WARNING:for mature readers only)

The season 5 premier i believe was the best and darkest opening in The Walking Dead. Rick, Glen, Bob, and Daryl are in deep trouble as they are tied from their hands and feet as they are taken to an slaughter house within TERMINUS. This is when the viewer realizes that the people within this place are cannibals. they are kneeled down along with 4 others as they and the viewer witness the butcher hits the other people in the back of their heads to knock them out with bats as the other butcher cuts their throats out with a large knife as the blood spills into the  stainless steel tub. Gareth does a bullet count and asks the butchers to give him the results until a rumble happens. Glen was about to be next to die until the rumble continues. As Gareth checks to see what is going on, Rick kills the two butchers with an wooden shiv he made while they were inside the train cart and freed the group. When they escaped the slaughterhouse, they rescue the rest of the group as Carol use an grenade launcher with an firecracker in the barrel to cause an explosion on an oil tank. Walkers begin to overrun the area, Rick and the rest fight their way to escape TERMINUS. at the end of the episode, Rick and Carol reunite along with Tyreese holding Judith (Rick’s daughter who separated with him in the last season while The Governor attacked the prison) as Rick runs to see and hold her. In the final few minutes of the episode, The group follows the railroad tracks until they happen upon a Terminus sign. Rick crosses out most of the text and modifies it to read, “No sanctuary.” Also in the post credits scene, Morgan appears alone as he is looking for Rick.

1. Beside the dying fire (S2:E13)

In my opinion, the best episode of TWD that has aired. After Rick kills Shane and to find out that he has reanimated into an Walker, Carl puts Shane down. that was the episode that lead to this episode as when Rick and Carl return to Hershel’s house, a large herd of Walkers approach. Rick and Carl lure a number of them to the shed as Rick set them on fire. Also, Lori, Maggie, Glen, Carol, Hershel, Andrea, Daryl and T-dog defend the house from approaching Walkers but they were starting to outnumber them along with devouring a few more of their members who could not defend themselves. the group separates as the Walkers overrun the farm. Rick, Carl and Hershel was at the highway the group was at before to wait and see if others would show up. everyone except Andrea showed up. They later go to an area to camp for the night and this is when Rick revealed to the group that once someone dies, they reanimate into an walker (they all wanted to know why some Walkers they have seen were not bitten when they saw them). On the final few minutes of the show, we see Andrea running for her life until she tripped and fell, An Walker walked up to her until someone with an sword shows up and decapitated the walker. The person also has 2 Walkers chained up to her as this is the long awaited debut of Michone. This episode was full of character development along with moments in this episode that affected the group later on in future episodes.
