Could These Protest and Riot Scenes From The Walking Dead Comic Book Series be Adapted on Screen in the Future?

When the COVID19 pandemic began to shut down cities across the world, millions and millions of americans from the start to now were uncertain with the future as if how normalcy will return. What also rised, is the brutal treatment of civilians by the police force in select locations of the United States. Speaking particularly of the death of George Floyd by the four policemen, it sparked an outrage online and in social gatherings to the level that we have not seen in quite some time.

These reactions have lead to protests around the world in support of George Floyd, and of the #blacklivesmatter movement. During these protests, We have seen looting, and the police overstepped their boundaries towards protestors. The four policemen have been fired from their positions, and is currently in jail awaiting trial. Now why would I bring this up? Because in the universe of The Walking Dead, something similar to that happened in the comic book series.

On issue #183 of The Walking Dead titled “And Michonne Without Her Sword,” Michonne and Elodie were called for help because an officer was being attacked. When they reached back to the city part of The Commonwealth, what was seen is that there were officers assaulting the individual named Anthony Keith.

Also to note, Michonne knew one of the officers that was part of the attack. The police attack was stopped, but a protest formed outside of Michonne’s house because she is the lawyer inside The Commonwealth. We find out hours later that Anthony passed away and the protest turned into a full scale riot.

Because Michonne is seen as a higher class member of The Commonwealth due to her status as a lawyer, the residends were not sure if she was on their side as they wanted justice for Anthony’s death by the policemen of The Commonwealth. So the protests turned into a riot and Michonne even got injured during the riot as well.

The riot stopped for good after Rick Grimes and his group showed up and Pamela asked Mercer to help stop it in issue #184. A trial was then started which is something we have not seen in the comic series or the television series of The Walking Dead up to this point.

Due to the current situation of the pandemic, filming for season 11 has not begun yet. But when it does, I am pretty sure that The Commonwealth arc will begin as the comic book material started with this on issue #175 (New World Order 1 of 6). When and if they reach the material for issue #183 on season 11 or season 12, my question is, will this riot be adapted on screen.

If it is adapted on screen, it might have to be toned down due to how similar it is to the real life police incidents involving police brutality towards civilians. I also thought of this because the newest season of 13 Reasons Why also featured a protest that lead towards a riot as well. To give Netflix and Paramount credit, they filmed that episode last fall and the world was much different than it is now.

But it is not to excuse that police brutality was still happening at the time because it was. It might be too close to home to see this adapted on screen especially since The Walking Dead has a extremely diverse cast. A riot on The Walking Dead television show that was caused by police brutality would draw reactions to all the viewers worldwide to the level of when Glenn and Abraham was killed a few seasons ago.

When I seen the cover of this issue back in 2018, I was really looking forward to see what would cause that riot since that has never been seen before at the time. Now with the current situation worldwide, I am very optimistic if this will ever be adapted.

Do you think these moments will be adapted on screen?

This PC Port of Super Mario 64 Looks Amazing

Super Mario 64 is one of the most influential video games of all time. Over the years, it was rereleased on the Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo WiU. The demand of a full remake has been discussed among the community within the last few years since a Nintendo Switch port has not been in production. But this user made it seem possible for it to be played on PC.

This version of Super Mario 64 is upscaled in graphics and in resolution. It plays the same exact way as the original without any slowdowns. It also removed the Nintendo 64’s linear filtering which was also a great decision. Just look at the textures on Peach’s Castle from the intro. It looks amazing. And it is also in 60fps. YouTube user Unreal (Not relatted to Unreal Engine), and so far, everyone loves what they are seeing. Although this mod was also made and released, Nintendo sent that user a DCMA takedown since Nintendo owns the IP rights. That mod does look absolutely great in it’s own right, but it is this high resolution port that takes me back to the original and improved the graphics to the level of how we see it on the Final Fantasy VIII Remaster.

There are other options in this mod that enables cheats, and removing the draw distance. Before you know it, you could see the full mod in action from start to finish.

Interview: Nerdist’s Rachel Heine

The Nerdist Book Club series has launched not too long ago on Nerdist’s YouTube channel by the key people at Nerdist. It started with a simple idea that turned into a weekly series as it is more than reading a book and reacting to it as Rachel Heine, Maude Garrett, and Hector Navarro bring in their unique personalities on the stream each week with their own spin on the books. Of the three, I recently got the chance to speak with Rachel Heine (Editor-in-Cheif) as we talked about her upbringing, joining Nerdist, her future goals, and much more in this exclusive interview.

I would like to start off with getting to know more about you. Where in Los Angeles did you grow up?

I grew up a little bit all over Los Angeles, between my mom and my dad: Beverly Grove, Atwater, Laurel Canyon, Venice, Westwood, and Santa Monica.

What were some goals that you set for yourself when you were transitioning from high school to college?

My main goal was to attend a school where I could study literature and writing. I was a pretty voracious reader, and wanted to become a novelist! I still would like to finish a novel one day, but I feel extremely fortunate to have found a job and career I’m passionate about.

You have received your degree in creative writing years ago prior to joining Nerdist. Which college did you attend and what were your favorite memories attending college?

I received a BA in Literature/Creative Writing the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara. We had to apply separately with materials relevant to our major — essays and short stories in my case. Classes were quite small and intimate, had no pre-requisites to take upper level courses, and you could sort of mold your major to your specific interests.

Studying abroad in Rome my junior year was honestly a life-changing experience for me. Not only did I get to explore the ruins and underground frescos of the city, I learned so much about myself and my writing. Also, the food.

As a writer myself, I like the television shows and films that I review. Whether they are good or not, it is sometimes hard to also criticize a not so good episode or movie. Do you feel the same way when it comes to either writing a review, or watching a show or movie that you like?

Great question. Personally, I have no trouble separating criticism with my enjoyment of pop culture. It’s actually what interests me the most. Analyzing, critiquing, and dissecting stories is why I got my degree in Literature, and why I love working at Nerdist. You can absolutely enjoy or appreciate a show, movie, or book while addressing its flaws. They’re not mutually exclusive!

Speaking of movies, what was the last movie that you watched before the pandemic began and what will be the first movie in the theaters that you would like to watch once the pandemic is over?

The last movie I watched is theaters before the pandemic was The Invisible Man, by Leigh Whannel. I was absolutely blown away. Horror is one of the original avenues to view dark, psychological topics. The Invisible Man shines a light on the realities of domestic abuse and gaslighting, AND kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

As for post-stay at home movies, Dune is at the top of my list. We’re currently reading Frank Herbert’s Dune for Nerdist Book Club (my first time) and I cannot wait to see what Denis Villeneuveand this incredible cast do with the lore and themes of such a classic novel.

Yourself, Maude Garrett, and Hector Navarro are hosts of the current Nerdist Book Club series back in April and it has been successful! What led to the three of you to make the Book Club a series and were there initial plans of the series before the current pandemic happened?

Maude, Hector, and I actually hosted a previous version of Nerdist Book Club on a former streaming service, which ran from 2016-2019. It’s truly the highlight of my week, and I am thrilled that we were able to bring it back at a time when we all need more connection. The Nerdist Book Club community is so thoughtful, so fun and supported, and I hope we can keep making this show for years to come!

One thing I like about the series is that it is more than just talking about a book to your viewers as it also showcases all of your fun personalities during the livestreams. Especially the recent episode (Dune Part 2) as well because of how organic all of your expressions are. How much pre-planning of your streams do the three of you do before you all begin?

We have an amazing production team who map out talking points for us to reference (which is incredibly helpful for Dune’s extensive list of terms and characters). But they always encourage us to use that as a framework, and let the conversation (spice?) flow. Reading along with Maude, Hector, and our incredible community always leads to ideas and interpretations that none of us would have come up with on our own. And our own personal experiences contribute to how a book resonates with us – which is just really fun to do every week!

I would like to see an episode where you all discuss the Game of Thrones book series if it is possible. I would also like to know what are some. future episodes that are currently on the schedule?

You are not the first to bring up Game of Thrones! It’s definitely on the table. We always go to our audience to source recommendations for our next book, and also host community polls so they can get final say. We’ve previously covered ever book in the Harry Potter series (a different book every other month), and I would love to cover the second book in His Dark Materials, The Subtle Knife.

The news of almost every comic convention being cancelled or moved to a different date has really affected my media schedule and I know for sure that it affected your schedule as well. Were you looking forward and to going to this year’s show? And any good memories from SDCC?

First and foremost, I feel for the fans and creators who are missing out on such an amazing experience this year – but I’m glad that everyone is being smart and safe. I’m definitely sad to miss this year, as I’ve worked Comic-Con for Nerdist the past 6 years in a row. My favorite part of any convention or festival is always seeing friends, colleagues, and fans so we can nerd out about all the announcements and trailers. I’m also bummed we aren’t able to host another Nerdist House, where we take over a venue in San Diego for interviews, live shows, meet & greets, and parties. But we’re also working on ways to connect with our audience virtually, to keep that convention spirit alive.

My final question, is what do you want to accomplish within the next few years?

Honestly, working for Nerdist has been such a defining experience for me and my career. My colleagues across the company, but especially the editorial team I lead, are so brilliant and funny and talented. I want to see Nerdist continue to grow and be an inclusive space for the insightful, irreverent, intelligent fans of pop culture out there. I’m in it for the long haul!

5 New Things We Learned About Samantha Morton on Friday Night in With The Morgans

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan, Samantha Morton as Alpha – The Walking Dead _ Season 10, Episode 11 – Photo Credit: Jace Downs/AMC

Since the start of the pandemic, production for The Walking Dead has been put on pause. But that did not stop The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan and his wife Hilarie Burton Morgan to bring us new content every week since last month as Friday Night In With The Morgans is the show to watch every week as them two along with new guests updates the fans with their daily lives during the pandemic. Friday Night In With The Morgans has been well recieved and everyone wants more of it. This week, Samantha Morton is a guest on the show and there are a few new things that we have learned from her during the episode.

Life for Her Overseas During the Pandemic

Samantha currently lives in the north of England. She is also planning to move to the south of England, which would be about four hours away from where she is currently living. She wants to move closer to the city so she can get farmimg materials. Samantha also said that her area finally got internet a year ago. This really surprised me as I did not know that the internet signals were very low in that area in the way she described it. Jeffrey Dean Morgan also said that the internet goes out only once a week from where they live.

“Magical Mushrooms”

The reason Samantha wants to get farmimg materials is because she would like to grow a mushroom farm. She also wants to go to school to learn how to grow them. There was a funny moment here where Jeffrey Dean Morgan called them “magic mushrooms” as they were all laughing. Hilarie then given Samantha Morton the title of “The Walter White of Mushroom Farmers.”

Working with Jeffrey Dean Morgan

The conversation shifted to Samantha Morton talking about her role as Alpha as Samantha stated that she misses everyone in Georgia which included the staff, and the cast. Samantha also said that she missed working with Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Jeffrey felt the same way as he said that working with Samantha is the greatest privilage of his professional career. Samantha thanked him for being cool and kind on the set when they both worked with eachother. Samantha also estimated that the size of England is the same as Georgia based on how wide the landscapes are. Hilarie and Samantha also talked about Samantha’s hair growing back as Hilarie said that it is similar to the David Bowie style.

That Godzilla Mask

While Samantha Morton played as Alpha on The Walking Dead, she had to have her mask on for most of the time. Now picture doing that in the hot summer especially in Georgia for hours. Samantha Morton brought up something funny as she said that during her husband’s birthday, he had a Godzilla mask on. He wanted to take it off as she said that he now knows how it feels to have a mask like that on. That was cute.

Finally, when they were all talking about items that they found during the time that they are quarantine, Samantha Morton was asked if she found anything while she was planning the move. She said she did not as they did not need too much stuff. Samantha then talked about the woman on a show that folds everything and made a joke and said “F*** that shit” and everyone laughed. It also even made me laugh. Hilarie however, did find a photo of Jeffrey Dean Morgan from his first birthday party.

Overall, a really fun episode and I can bet that everyone in The Walking Dead family was happy to see Samantha Morton again! Also, please AMC can we finally have Negan drop some F bombs in the next season of The Walking Dead?

Breaking News: Zack Snyder’s Justice League Cut to be Released on HBO Max in 2021

The unreleased version of the 2017 film Justice League will finally be shown to the world on HBO Max in 2021. This followed years of a campaign that has been backed by the fans, and the actors itself to show the “Snyder Cut” of the film.

The film’s director Zack Snyder announced the news that everyone has been waiting for during a live Q&A on Wednesday right after a virtual watch party of Man of Steel as Snyder made it clear that it will be released next year. Snyder did most of the work on Justice League prior to it’s original release, but he had to step away from post-production due to a family emergency. Warner Bros. then brought Joss Whedom to finish the post production, and the vision was completly different than what Snyder’s vision was.

#releasethesnydercut eventually grew to a massive following and backup of support as fans wanted to see the film on how it was intended to from the start. Gal Gadot even tweeted the hashtag as well and recently, Jason Moma wanted the Snyder Cut to be released. Snyder admitted that the film existed and it was rumored that he screened the film to Warner Bros. earlier this year.

You can easily browse through the HBO Max catalogue offering 10.000 hours of content and filter by release year, IMDb rating, genres, etc at JustWatch. You can also see what’s been added recently.

JustWatch is an international Streaming Guide with more than 20 million users. We are able to show you where to watch movies & tv shows legally online and can help you to find what to watch on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and so on.

Movie Review: Scorn

Scorn tells the story of three people that has a passion of the film industry as they are all planning their next film. The film stars Lindsley Register (as Zoey), who is known as Laura on AMC’s The Walking Dead, Alexandar McPherson as Liam, and Daniel Ellis as Merrick. What happens when these three come together to make their film, you will find out now in my review of Scorn.

Zoey is the girlfriend of Liam, and they are coming back from the premiere party of Liam’s recent film as Zoey and Liam talked about the premiere and the fact that Liam was talking to one of the co-stars of his film, Olivia. They have an argument over that and his alcohol use since he was drinking at the party, and now their house. Then, here comes Merrick as he entered the house. Merrick wanted to cast Liam and Zoey as leads for a future film that he is producing. The key thing here during this sequence, is that Merrick was also at the premiere and he seen Liam not only talking to Olivia, but he seen them both go upstairs and away from the view. Scorn starts to pick up here when you Merrick placed the cocaine on the table and Zoey was really testing Liam here to see if he will do it after she did it. After they did that, they begin to talk about their love lives and their past. Also to note, Liam’s former lover was killed before he meet Zoey, but more of that soon. They started going over the scenes of his film. They talk about this while Liam is riding a bicycle around the living room.

Liam then received a phone call as he was told that his pilot has been green lit and the production will begin in Georgia soon. This was exciting news. Merrick then wanted both Zoey and Merrick to rehearse their scenes. One of those scenes that were rehearsed, had a version where Zoey and Liam had to do their lines and the same scene again, but with Zoey without any clothes on afterwards. It is at this point where I thought that Merrick wanted to plot to break them up. The next time they rehearsed that scene, it got intense as they were talking to eachother in character in a way that mirrored their current situation in their relationship. Also, bonus points for that glass breaking because I like the sound of glass breaking. Liam wanted to be with Olivia, and Zoey confronted him about it after Merrick told Zoey about Liam cheating on Zoey with Olivia. Merrick then decided to kiss Zoey and she pushed away. At this moment, I wanted Merrick out of the room and so did Liam as he yelled for Merrick to get out the house since he figured out that Merrick wanted to be with Zoey. Both Liam and Zoey talked about the scene that they rehearsed as they both felt that they were actually talking to eachother in that rehearsal and not their characters.

Liam told Zoey that he does not want to be with her anymore as he wants to be with Olivia for various reasons. Zoey did not want to break up with him. Then, blood comes out his mouth suddenly. We find out here that the drink that Liam had was meant for Olivia as it was spiked. Liam fell to the floor and Zoey tried to save him. It is revealed here, that Zoey also killed Liam’s former lover. Liam dies, and Zoey says that they both belong together as she use a knife on herself to commit suicide as the film ends.

Scorn not only showcases the struggles of creating your own show or movie ideas, it also brings awareness of how dark hollywood can get that meets beyond the eye. For an independent film, I thought the theme and tone was brought to light very well as there are positives and negatives of the industry. Lindsley Register’s potential is also really shown here as she made a believer out of me during the whole film. I also like the rest of the cast as well on the film and it also makes me wonder, what else happens in this indursty that is not shown to light. I enjoyed Scorn and this is a film that should not be missed. If you have a little over an hour to spare, check Scorn out on Amazon Prime.

Check out my interview with Lindsley Register and director Jonathan Kirk on this interview I had with the both of them below.

How Does the Yu-Gi-Oh Kozmo Cards Archetype Connect With Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz

Since the mid 2000’s, different archetypes of the Yu-Gi-Oh card game has dominated the competitive scene. Before the recent change of the master rule, the “Burning Abyss” archetype has been the main choice of playstyle of players. The different archetypes of cards has different card effects and playstyles. The one archetype that has caught my interest in recent years is the “Kozmo” archetype. These cards focus on the use of their Field Spell card to take advantage of banished monsters. Their monsters are a mix of Psychic and Machine type monsters. What really caught my interest, is the meaning of the cards are they are a hybrid of Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz. Today, I will analyzie the connections of the Kozmo cards with Wizard of Oz and Star Wars.

Kozmo Dark Planet has the highest attack points for one reason. It is the Death Star in the Star Wars universe and it clearly showcases that due to it’s size and similar shape. From the Wizard of Oz, it is the Wicked Witch’s Castle. Kozmo Dark Eclipser is based off of the Star Destroyer from Star Wars, and the Black Bee from Oz. Kozmo Delta Shuttle is inspired by the Imperial Shutter from Star Wars, and the Wild Crow from Oz.

Kozmo Dark Destroyer is Darth Maul’s ship, the Sith Infiltrator. The shape of that ship is very similar to the actual size of the ship. From the Wizard of Oz universe, the Dark Destroyer is considered the Flying Broomstick. Over to the Kozmo DOG Fighter, It is based off the TIE fighters from Star Wars, and the Wolf from Oz. And finally from these three, the Kozmo Farmgirl takes inspiration from Dorothy as you can see from the way she is dressed. On the Star Wars side, it is debated on various fourms whether if she is either Luke Skywalker, Anakin Skywalker, or Mara Jade.

The next three cards are interesting itself. Kozmo Forerunner in the Wizard of Oz universe is the silver slippers. For those that do not know, the slippers were silver in the book. But on the film, it was red. More about this in a moment. On the Star Wars side, Forerunner is the Millennium Falcon. Kozmo Godwitch has a light sword and she is Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars universe. Godwitch is also Glinda the Good Witch on the Oz side. The trap card Kozmojo shows the force which is a feature in the Star Wars universe that has been a staple since the first film. Over at Oz, this trap card is considered magic in that universe.

Kozmo Landwalker is based on the All Terran Transport which was first seen on The Empire Strikes Back. On the Oz side, it is inspired by the Giant Spider on the book. The spell card Kozmo Lightsword is based on the lightsaber on Star Wars, and the magic wand on Oz. Kozmo Dark Lady is the Wicked Witch of the West on Oz, and Darth Vader on Star Wars. Also, her hand is the one on the Kozmojo trap card.

Kozmojo Wicked Witch is Darth Maul on the Star Wars universe as you can tell that her lightsword is nearly almost the same as Darth Maul’s lightsaber. She is also the Wicked Witch of the East on Oz. Kozmojo Scardey Lion is very similar to the Lion on Oz, and Chewbacca on Star Wars. And the Kozmo Sliprider is the ruby slippers on Oz, and the X-Wing on Star Wars. Notice who is the pilot on that ship.

These last set of cards are the most interesting and is closest to both universes. The Kozmo Soartroopers are a blend of the Winged Monkeys and Stormtroopers on Star Wars and Oz. The Tincan and Strawman are C-3PO and R2D2 from Star Wars, and The Scarecrow and Tin Woodman from Oz. Kozmotown, the card that aquires the most support of all of the cards on this list, is Emerald City from Oz, and Coruscant from Star Wars. And finally, Kozmourning is both the scene of the death of The Wicked Witch of the West from Oz, and the death of Darth Vader from Star Wars.

How Should The Walking Dead Celebrate Their 10th Anniversary

There is no secret now that season 10 finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead has been delayed until the fall due to the ongoing pandemic that halted the post production process. What also came with this is the second airdate delay of The Walking Dead: World Beyond as it was set to debut right after the season 10 finale and also at WonderCon 2020 which would have been the world premiere as well. The sixth season of Fear The Walking Dead stopped filming too as it was also affected. With these delays and pushbacks, it is a sad time for the entire The Walking Dead franchise. However, one idea that was brought to my attention was to have a special event for the franchise this fall.

Twitter user ConnectedVG came up with the idea for The Walking Dead universe to celebrate their ten year anniversary as a special event on the day that the first episode aired. This could be possible, but October 31st is on a Saturday this year so it could most likely air the weekend of New York Comic Con as it did it previous years. By that time, some restrictions should be eased which would give time for the studios to finish the post production.

This idea might also work due to Fear launching sometime in August, according to star Danay García. So if Fear premieres in mid to late August, then the mid-season finale will air before the season 10 finale of The Walking Dead. Then after that episode, World Beyond can make it’s long awaited debut. This also must mean that all three of these episodes should not be on AMC Premiere a few days prior to the airdate. Another idea that was brought to me is if they could also air all three of the episodes in one night in the movie theaters just like it did during the season 8 finale of The Walking Dead and the season 4 premiere of Fear The Walking Dead at the time.

Nicotero explained the post-production process to Entertainment Weekly: “You have to edit the episode, then you do sound effects, and then you do music, and then visual effects, and then colour timing to make sure all the colours in all the scenes match, and then you have to do a quality check to make sure nothing is messed up.” The post production studio of The Walking Dead is in Los Angeles and with the current lockdown, it is not possible to finish the post production since it takes an entire team to do this. Rotating the team would not be a good idea as everyone has to be there to finish the post production at the same time.

During my recent interview with star Melissa McBride, she had this to say about what can we excpect from the finale: “It’s going to be a really good finale and we are going to give everyone something really good to look forward to because, I know the finale is amazing. There was a lot of work done on that when we shot it last fall. But it will be something that people will remember and look forward to in the next season as well so I am grateful for the work that we have done.”
