Todd, The Ugliest Kid On Earth – Ken Kristensen – M.K. Perker

People have been talking about this book for a while now. But as usual I try to stay away from all that till I get a chance to form my own opinion.

So what’s the verdict? Let’s take a look at what we’ve get…

Todd, he lives in the suburbs, he’s terrorized by the neighborhood troglodyte. He’d like to have friends, he doesn’t. But you know what? He’s a positive, nice kid. Oh and he has to wear a bag on his head. All the time. What? Didn’t you read the title? Ugliest Kid on Earth?

This book immediately reminded me of all the wonderful books I read in my early teens. Paul Zindel’s “The Undertaker’s Gone Bananas” and the like. Ken Kristensen has crafted a story that brings you right back to that time. As you watch Todd go through life, you feel like you know him. He’s a good kid, a kind person, but the world just keeps kicking him, even when he’s down. The bully beats him up, tells his mom it’s Todd’s fault and of course she believes the bully. Todd is getting yelled at in class, the bully makes a comment, Todd gets blamed and sent to the principal. The empathy builds as you see him get placed squarely behind the eight ball. I won’t go into spoiler territory here but it’s a great plot, one of those mysteries wrapped up in the mundane. I can’t wait to see how the mystery unravels.

The art is inspired, just as in AIR (Vertigo 2009-2010) M.K. Perker’s work still amazes. His short run on Unwritten from Vertigo (issue #31-35) was one of my favorites. In Todd he gives characters that appear exaggerated cartoony even, but who are completely believable and seem totally real.
