2013: A Comic Book Comeback

By Robert “Rob Base” Greenwood

Most sites do a year-in review (or the best of), but this time, I want to talk about the feeling of nostalgia and the return of comic book royalty.

With the massive success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon show,

https://i1.wp.com/spinoff.comicbookresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-nickelodeon.jpg?resize=308%2C316

it was only fitting that someone would make a comic based on it and IDW  knocked this series out of the park; not only making a tie-in comic, but continued the stories of TMNT past history.

https://i0.wp.com/www.mikeystmnt.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/tmnt-idw-ashcan.jpg?resize=377%2C584 https://i1.wp.com/comicbookrealm.com/cover-scan/6b41a457a615623790f5d96dddcfd09a/xl/idw-publishing-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-new-animated-adventures-issue-6ri.jpg?resize=379%2C585

While, for the purist trading all the past works from Mirage and Archie comics, this is truly a come back in all its forms, making Turtle power and kicking bad guys back sides fun and entertaining once again.

https://i0.wp.com/www.comicbookresources.com/images/solicits/idw/201307/TMNTadvent-vol5CVR-copy.jpg?resize=408%2C586 https://i1.wp.com/shop.idwpublishing.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/t/m/tmnt_cc10_cvr.jpg?resize=387%2C588

Next brings me to something I didn’t expect to ever see done. Once again, IDW comics grabs a property by the neck and brings in a winner with the remastered issues of The Maxx. That’s right, IDW and Sam Kieth have brought The Maxx to a new generation of fans and all Sam did was punch up the color palette.

https://i0.wp.com/comicbookrealm.com/cover-scan/483edf3647fe6a77f572a32629cd2be3/xl/idw-publishing-the-maxx-maxximized-issue-1sub.jpg?w=840

The remastered editions are not the “Star Wars” of the comic book world. All they have done is given the comic a prettier paint job and said this is what it is and we like that way!

I am so pleased with this series and I hope it finds and inspires a new audience.

IDW isn’t the only comic book company making good on history. Some do it by reinventing the way we look at comics.

Dynamite, for the better part of a few years, has taken pulp fiction icons and gave them a home to be heroes in.
But most recently, its crossover books are just amazing. With The Kings Watch leading the charge

https://i0.wp.com/cdn.comixology.com/2013/AUG13/AUG131165.jpg?w=840

and  DC crossing paths with IDW on a Spirit/The Rocketeer,

https://i1.wp.com/www.previewsworld.com/catalogimages/STK_IMAGES/STK600001-620000/STK615377.jpg?resize=642%2C974

the past worlds collide and tell some fun and action packed stories.

If 2014 can continue this trend, then we are in a wonderful time for modern comic books.

Comic book review: Kings Watch

Kings watch brings Defenders of the earth back together

20130923-183648.jpg

Kings Watch brings three King Features Syndicate comic strip characters together in a new, refreshing miniseries. Dynamite was wise in its decision to task writer Jeff Parker with ushering these characters into the 21st century, since his past work—Hulk, Agents of Atlas—has played off of 1950s popular culture and science fiction nostalgia. It’s only natural that he can make the Phantom, Flash Gordon and Mandrake work in a modern day story without being campy.

To quote REM, “It’s the end of the world as we know it…” The story opens on Dale Arden — Flash Gordon’s longtime sweetheart — experiencing the same reoccurring nightmare of frightening creatures on horseback with whips, showing absolutely no mercy (if you happen to be a fan of Mr. Gordon’s classic stories, then you’ll instantly recognize them as demons from the planet Mongo).

Soon, swirling bursts of orange-red light in the sky occupy the world’s attention, including Flash, Phantom and Mandrake — an ominous foreshadowing of terrible things to come.

Meanwhile, The Cobra — our obvious villain — tortures an unfortunate victim (to the point of obliteration) for intel on the location of the King’s Watch.

The Cobra, too, is questioning the significance of these swirling lights and where they came from, making mention of an opened gate and that the other “crystal” is alive — a bit forced in giving any sort of clarity to what’s going on, just that these lights mean bad news.

Afterward we’re introduced to the title’s three main characters: The Phantom with his companions, Devil and Hero, in Bangalla; the Mandrake being characteristically mysterious in his mansion and Flash Gordon unnervingly enthused by Dr. Zarkov’s talk of a potential apocalypse.

Showcasing each of the heroes at home in their respective surroundings manages to best describe what these characters are about, without coming off as a spoon-fed crash course to both new and old fans.

Trying to get to the bottom of the phenomenon from a civilian perspective is Dale Arden, who is working on some sort of tracking device. With her being a scientific journalist, the story develops in finding out what is causing this aerial event.

NASA launches a probe in a centaur rocket to gather more information on the lights. And who’s the only man fit for the job? Flash Gordon and his never-say-die attitude, naturally!

We soon meet up with Lothar — Mandrake’s trusted friend and crime-fighting partner from the original comics — acting as a safari tour guide. His group suddenly encounters a demonic prehistoric creature fighting an elephant, saved in the nick of time by The Phantom.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Lothar will come into play in this miniseries, and what his ultimate role will be in the story going forward. As it stands, it seems as though the members of the Kings Watch already know each other, or will soon begin a unique relationship. But what I truly look forward to is how the methodologically minded Mandrake will interact with The Phantom and Flash Gordon, who are, by and large, two men of pure action.

Although this is a five-part series based on timeless characters, it’s a storyline that is strong enough on its own. Still, to appreciate the full extent of what Parker is doing, it helps to look into their history, especially regarding past relationships and how they developed.

Artist Marc Laming’s pencils and inks are superb, drawing with much detail and fluidity that never stalls an action sequence. Even scenes that are more reserved or domestic demonstrate Laming’s artistic flair. Complimenting the pencils and inks are colorist Jordan Boyd’s use of a subdued palette, adding depth and dimension to scenery that highlights the characters. Overall, their styles are fitting for a series influenced by the pulp stories of yesteryear.

It’s evident that Kings Watch is definitely going to have a classic feel, where plot is more important than character development. Yet, how can it not with heroes driven by the sense of adventure? Admittedly, it’s hard not to feel thrown into the story with little to no introduction. Even so, this is gearing up to be a wild ride worth taking, with everything falling in to its proper place… in due time.

3.5/5

Review: Vampirella 27

Vampirella 27

Vampi27-cov-Parrillo

If you have never read Vampirella then maybe coming into the series this late in may confuse you a bit. Vampirella has and will always be my wife’s favorite comic book character and to see her return with a solid company like Dynamite makes our eyes very pleased.

Needless to say Vampirella starts this issue off being chased by some real mean ugly hunters. She is saved by a mysterious person, what will become perfectly clear is why this person shows up to help Vampy now. We also get a fantastic back up story that will overlap with Vampirella.

It’s hard to talk about this ongoing series without spoiling anything and I just can’t bring myself to do it. But I will say that Reading Vampy since the 90’s and owning all her Warren books this issue and all the past to this point honor the series as a whole.

If you are looking for an outright sexy vampire story stop here and move on Vampirella has always been and will always be one of the top female comic book heroes of all time.

I give this issue 3/5 only because it is not a solid jumping on point but it isn’t the worst either.

Go out and Buy Vampirella and all the amazing titles that Dynamite has to offer
