DARK HORSE SHIFTS ‘GHOST FLEET,’ ‘RESURRECTIONISTS’ & ‘SUNDOWNERS’ TO DARK HORSE DIGITAL EXCLUSIVES
from Bill, February 22nd, 2015 1:35 pm, comic book

NEW ISSUES OF CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SERIES CONTINUE VIA DIGITAL PUBLICATION, FOLLOWED BY EXPEDITED PRINT COLLECTIONS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR—Reaffirming its commitment to its fans and the storytelling vision of its creators, Dark Horse Comics is proud to announce the establishment of Dark Horse Digital Exclusives, which will include all-new, exclusive story content for The Ghost Fleet, Resurrectionists, and Sundowners.

Additionally, Dark Horse will publish print graphic novel collections for The Ghost Fleet and Sundowners, collecting the DHDE original content for fans looking to complete their print collections. A full collection of Resurrectionists, featuring the final issues available as digital exclusives, will also be available, ahead of schedule.

“We are confident in the quality of these stories and want to ensure that readers have the opportunity to fully experience them,” said Dark Horse president and publisher Mike Richardson. “Dark Horse is throwing its support behind these creators and their innovative titles, and we are choosing to continue them in a series of original graphic novels. These stories deserve to be told, and to continue in a reader-friendly and accessible format. In the meantime, for those who would like to continue reading the series, we will also offer new issues of each title on our Dark Horse Digital platform.”

Creators of the Dark Horse Digital exclusive series also expressed their enthusiasm and excitement at the opportunity to conclude their stories on both the DHD platform and in collected graphic novels.

“Since my very first baby steps with the company, Dark Horse has been incredibly welcoming and supportive—they take wild chances on wild creators with bananas ideas (Go get The Paybacks in September!),” Ghost Fleet writer Donny Cates said. “The market can be a bear sometimes; we all know this. It’s no one’s fault. As a former retailer myself, I know how hard the decisions that go into taking on new books can be. But instead of cursing the darkness, we’re going to shine a light. And in the case of Ghost Fleet it’s going to be a shotgun-fireball ending you’ll see from f#%ing space. Thanks to the tireless creative efforts of Daniel Warren Johnson, Lauren Affe, Chris Crank, our editorial heavyweights, and Dark Horse’s seemingly never-ending commitment to making great comics, we will give the fans what they deserve: an awesome ending to an awesome comic.”

“I’m not sure why some books succeed while others don’t, especially when I know Dark Horse has been making some super-cool, all-new, creator-owned material that I was proud to be part of,” Tim Seeley, writer of Sundowners, said. “But I’m glad they’ve got the dedication and respect to ensure readers and creators get to bring their stories to a logical conclusion.”

“I am a huge fan of both Ghost Fleet and Sundowners and am thrilled Dark Horse is committed to continuing them in another format, along with the remainder of the Resurrectionists run,” Resurrectionists writer Fred Van Lente said. “They’re all great comics, and moving them to the digital space is a great opportunity to give them another chance to thrive.”

New issues of The Ghost Fleet, Resurrectionists, and Sundowners on Dark Horse Digital will debut the same date as their originally scheduled print counterparts. Release dates for the graphic novel collections can be found below.

A WILD ROMP THROUGH DEPRESSION-ERA NEW YORK CITY
from Bill, February 22nd, 2015 1:23 pm, comic book

A WILD ROMP THROUGH DEPRESSION-ERA NEW YORK CITY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR—Eisner Award winner Jonathan Case (Green River Killer) is back with his latest original graphic novel, and he’s ready to take readers to an iconic era of American history.

The New Deal harks back to the 1930s and the Depression era of New York City as Case explores class misconceptions, racial tension, and deft cat burglary through the lens of a bellhop and a maid in the Waldorf Astoria.

When a charming woman named Nina checks in to the iconic hotel with a high-society entourage, young Frank, a bellhop, and Theresa, a maid, get caught up in a series of mysterious thefts. The stakes quickly grow perilous, and the pair must rely on each other to discover the truth while navigating delicate class politics.

“It’s a fun opportunity because of the comedy caper and crime aspect. It’s seen through these characters that are on the outside of everything that’s happening in the social scenes,” Case told Comic Book Resources. “It’s a really interesting time period, set in 1935, 1936, and there’s a wealth of economic and social conflicts, and exciting things happening at that time, like women’s rights and race relations. Even though it’s a comedy and it’s played mostly for whimsical laughs, I get to explore some of those things I’m interested in.”

Releasing September 23 for $16.99, The New Deal displays Case’s love of black-and-white film through his lovingly researched art.

Preorder your copy today from Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, IndieBound, or your local comics retailer.

Praise for Jonathan Case’s Dear Creature:

“Dear Creature is sure to be one of the quirkiest and most surprising love stories you will ever read.”—Gene Luen Yang (Boxers & Saints)
“Case’s b&w art sometimes stretches reality for humorous effect, but keeps even the strangest scenes from feeling merely grotesque. The script also generates a surprising amount of pathos for the lovers’ doomed passion. Startlingly assured for a debut effort.”—Publishers Weekly

“Case shows that he’s a creator to watch out for, and I hope he keeps doing weird and wonderful comics like this one.”—Comic Book Resources’ Comics Should Be Good

Major US publisher’s titles are available on the specialist graphic novel app from today

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dark Horse Comics has announced that its graphic novels will be included in the SEQUENTIAL iPad app, with the first tranche of titles released today. The move makes SEQUENTIAL the first third-party digital comics app to distribute a full range of titles from Dark Horse.

Founded in 1986, Dark Horse has grown to become the third-largest comics publisher in the United States and one of the “Big Five” alongside Marvel, DC, Image and IDW. They are behind many of the most famous and well-regarded properties of recent years, including Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo, and Frank Miller’s Sin City, as well as a huge range of licensed comics such as Aliens, Predator, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mass Effect, Tomb Raider and Halo.

SEQUENTIAL features hundreds of graphic novels and comics from leading creators and publishers, made available digitally via their acclaimed storefront app and reader for the iPad. SEQUENTIAL’s mission is to expand the market for graphic novels for adults with a beautifully presented, carefully curated selection of material that focuses on the richness of the medium outside of the typical superhero offering.

The app also includes exclusive work by top names such as Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman, often with expanded features such as audio commentaries.

The announcement of the partnership is accompanied by the first tranche of specially-selected digital titles, including Will Eisner’s Fagin the Jew, Bryan Talbot’s Grandville Noël, Gilbert Hernandez’s Speak of the Devil, Vivek J, Tiwary’s The Fifth Beatle: The Brian Epstein Story, Canales and Guarnido’s Blacksad and Mike Mignola’s Hellboy. Many more titles will follow.

Legendary writer/ artist Mike Mignola and acclaimed novelist Christopher Golden

present the rise of a villain for the ages in BALTIMORE: THE CULT OF THE RED KING

from Dark Horse Comics

February 5, 2014: There is an absolute evil. The Red King lives. On May 6 2015, the legendary creator of HELLBOY, Mike Mignola, and NEW YORK TIMES bestselling novelist Christopher Golden will reunite to present the rise of a new villain: the Red King in BALTIMORE: THE CULT OF THE RED KING, a five part comic book series from Dark Horse Comics with art by award winning children’s book illustrator Peter Bergting, colors by the award winning Dave Stewart and stunning covers by Ben Stenbeck (FRANKENSTEIN UNDERGROUND).

The Red King is legendary. But is he the stuff of myth—or the ultimate adversary of the human race? In this series, Lord Baltimore discovers the truth about an ancient evil that threatens to destroy the world.

“What I love best about BALTIMORE is that I really believe there’s nothing else like it in the comics marketplace. It’s unique,” said acclaimed co-writer and novelist Christopher Golden. “THE CULT OF THE RED KING is epic horror spanning three continents, with a large cast of characters and a real sense of dread thanks to stunning art by Peter Bergting and the mood set by the colors of Dave Stewart, who is the best colorist in the business, bar none.”

The events of BALTIMORE: THE CULT OF THE RED KING take place after the events of the BALTIMORE novel co-written by Mignola and Golden. “I’m really excited about this new direction we’re taking with the Baltimore book and Peter Bergting and Dave Stewart continue to really deliver the goods,” said Mignola.

“Baltimore succeeded in his quest for revenge, and now, barely hanging onto his humanity, Baltimore’’s diving into a much bigger mission,” said Dark Horse Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie. “He’s not just taking down the most evil people he can find–he’s facing off with evil itself.”

Black magic, corrupt religion and absolute evil? Beware the Red King. BALTIMORE: THE CULT OF THE RED KING goes on sale from Dark Horse Comics on May 6 2015. BALTIMORE: OR, THE STEADFAST TIN SOLDIER AND VAMPIRE will be available for paperback for the first time in July of 2015.

STEVE NILES’S ‘CRIMINAL MACABRE: CAL MCDONALD BUST’ DEBUTS AT TOY FAIR 2015!
from Bill, February 3rd, 2015 9:32 pm, Uncategorized

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR—Dark Horse Comics will reveal a new bust of Criminal Macabre’s Cal McDonald at Toy Fair 2015 in New York City.

Steve Niles’s Criminal Macabre features one of the most hard-boiled protagonists in all of comics, a denizen of darkness and sketchy nightspots, the antihero’s antihero: Cal McDonald.

Cal investigates crimes that others won’t touch. The cops (and nice people generally) avoid Cal. But an array of otherworldly types won’t leave him alone.

Our bust, sculpted by horror specialist William Paquet, shows Cal with the tools of his trade. The base is an artistic swirl of demons emerging from the ether.

“I am thrilled with what they’ve done with the sculpt of Cal. It’s an absolutely gorgeous piece of work. Criminal Macabre fans will be blown away,” remarked creator Steve Niles.

The bust measures a big 14 inches tall. Packaged in a full-color box, with a certificate of authenticity signed by both Niles and Paquet, this hand-painted, numbered piece is limited to only 375 copies. Available August 2015 for $149.99.

The prototype will be revealed at the Dark Horse booth, #4837, at Toy Fair 2015, held February 1417 at Jacob Javits Center in New York City.

Additionally, Dark Horse will produce a special rare winged Cal McDonald variant bust.

As Dark Horse readers know, we sometimes see Cal with an awesome set of wings. Dark Horse has produced an ultrarare variant for the serious collector. This variant will be limited to 75 pieces. The wingspan is a giant 13 inches across. Packaged in a special white box with a color sticker graphic and surprise extras, this piece is subject to allocation. Available July 2015 for $225.
