Dark Horse Comics Announces Christmas in July & Major HELLBOY & THE BPRD News
from Bill, July 7th, 2015 11:05 pm, Comic Book News, SDCC

Dark Horse Comics Announces Christmas in July & Major HELLBOY & THE BPRD News

iZOMBIE co-creator Chris Roberson and Award-winning artist Paolo Rivera join the Mignolaverse

FRANKENSTEIN UNDERGROUND artist Ben Steinbeck to illustrate HELLBOY & THE BPRD: 1953

Dark Horse Comics to Publish HELLBOY: WINTER SPECIAL

Writer John Arcudi to Conclude His Acclaimed Run on BPRD

(July 7, 2015) And you thought the fireworks ended on the Fourth of July? In advance of San Diego Comic Con 2015, Dark Horse Comics revealed today a series of major announcements for the strange, shared Mignolaverse of comic books and graphic novels comprised of Hellboy, Abe Sapien, BPRD, Frankenstein Underground, Lobster Johnson and Witchfinder. In a year in which a new dinosaur has been named after Mike Mignola’s most famous creation and Dark Horse Comics has teased that “the impossible will happen” in the Mignolaverse, today’s news brings still more surprises: a new series, a new one-shot special,  new high profile collaborators and the departure of a longtime writer.

  • Legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and acclaimed Frankenstein Underground artist Ben Stenbeck will reunite to launch the new series Hellboy and the BPRD: 1953. Starting in October, timed to Halloween, they will release two one shots that follow Hellboy to England for his first-ever ghost hunt. Hellboy is joined by Professor Bruttenholm in the field to fight the phantom hand of a murderer and a demonic water spirit in stories reminiscent of the early Mignola masterpiece The Corpse.
  • Next January, the upcoming Hellboy Winter Special one-shot will include contributions of major, still unannounced comic book artists and will include the first ever Mignolaverse story co-written by Chris Roberson, the co-creator of iZOMBIE. Roberson and Mignola will co-write a 12 page story illustrated by Michael Walsh (Secret Avengers). The following month, Roberson will debut as the ongoing co-writer for Hellboy & The BPRD, with Mignola, working with artist Eisner & Harvey Award winning art team Paolo Rivera (Daredevil) and Joe Rivera.
  • Next year will also see the conclusion of John Arcudi’s acclaimed run on BPRD which started in 2004. His run will conclude with issue 147 when BPRD: HELL ON EARTH concludes.

“I’m excited,” said Mike Mignola. “I’m always excited to work with Ben Stenbeck and it’s great to finally see his take on Hellboy. And I’m excited about working with Chris Roberson–He’s bringing a wonderful new energy and a lot of new ideas to Hellboy AND THE BPRD (and a couple other books we aren’t ready to talk about yet). And I’m excited about the amazing way John Arcudi is wrapping up BPRD HELL ON EARTH. Of course we are all sorry to see him leave the title but he is doing such an amazing job on his way out. I will be forever in his debt–He is really responsible for making the BPRD what it is and while I’m excited about where that book is going (can’t say anything about that yet) everything we do in the future will be built on top of the rock solid foundation John created.”

“I’ve been an enormous fan of Hellboy since the very beginning and I’ve got the action figure and lunch box to prove it,” said Chris Roberson. “BPRD has been and remains one of my all-time favorite series, so getting the opportunity to work with Mike Mignola in exploring Hellboy’s early days as a BPRD agent is an incredible thrill.”

“I won’t lie; it’s kinda sad,” said John Arcudi. “Mike and Scott handed me this universe so long ago, and to say it’s been a creatively rewarding experience doesn’t even start to cover it.  From day one on up, I always worked with some of the very best artists in comics, and we’re talking about eleven straight years here!  Of course I’m happy about that, and about having seen the Hell on Earth arc through from beginning to end — but I know there’s still a lot of story to tell, and I don’t want to go stale on this team after the huge solid they did for me, trusting me to play in this fantastic universe.  That wouldn’t be right.  I want to go out while the stories still feel fresh to me, and to Mike, and to Scott.”

I was shocked when John said he wanted to move on,” said Dark Horse Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie. “He’s been essential to growing Mike’s world, the first guy we trusted to bring his own personality to the big stories, making the characters his own in lots of ways. For all the planning that goes into the Mignola books, there are actually things in John’s climactic run of BPRD that we never thought we’d do. He’s leaving BPRD with a bang. After Hell on Earth, we’re tackling Mike’s biggest mythological material, bringing in other voices like Chris Roberson to tell this next wave of stories, and everyone kicking in will be reading and rereading John’s work, me included, to make sure we get it right.”

SDCC 2015: OLD WEST MEETS NEW MAGIC IN GREK PAK’S ‘KINGSWAY WEST’

SDCC 2015: OLD WEST MEETS NEW MAGIC IN GREK PAK’S ‘KINGSWAY WEST’

PAK’S FIRST ORIGINAL SERIES FEATURES REVOLUTIONARY PREORDER SYSTEM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR—This November, award-winning writer Greg Pak makes his Dark Horse debut with Kingsway West, his first creator-driven original series!

After thirteen years in prison, a Chinese gunslinger named Kingsway Law just wants to find his wife. But in a fantastical American Old West crackling with magic, monsters, and racist vigilantes, trouble just won’t leave him be. And in this case, trouble is a woman with a magic sword who needs his help.

“The Old West of Kingsway West reflects all of the social, economic and racial conflicts and tensions of the actual Old West—but it’s also a world in which magic rather than technology drives much of the upheaval,” Pak told Comic Book Resources. “The whole scenario gives us a chance to think about the actual West in a new way—and maybe imagine entirely new ways for America to be born. And, of course, it’s about heroes following their hearts as they make their way through a vast and dangerous frontier.”

A four-issue miniseries, Kingsway West features the illustrations of Mirko Colak (Red Skull: Incarnate, Turok) and a revolutionary preorder system built from the ground up by Pak. Readers can easily preorder the entire series by heading to KingswayWest.com or contact their local comic shop directly.

Interested retailers can also find out how to participate on the official Kingsway West website.

SDCC 2015: LARA CROFT RETURNS IN ‘LARA CROFT AND THE FROZEN OMEN’

CORINNA BECKHO AND RANDY GREEN BRING HIGH-SPIRITED ACTION AND CLASSIC ADVENTURE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR—Lara Croft® is back with dual pistols, sharp wit, and an eye for action as acclaimed writer Corinna Beckho takes on the video game icon in Lara Croft and the Frozen Omen this October.

Based in the same universe as the Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris® and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light® video games from Crystal Dynamics, Lara Croft and the Frozen Omen is a five issue miniseries written by Bechko and illustrated by Tomb Raider® comics veteran Randy Green.

In this all-new adventure, Lara must stop a group of cultists from causing world-wide cataclysmic devastation, and ancient ivory artifacts hold the key to both salvation and destruction! It’s a race against time in Lara’s new quest, filled with incredible action, dual pistols, and non-stop adventure.

“Lara is incredibly fun to write,” Bechko told Polygon. “She doesn’t suffer fools, she’s smart, and she’s talented. She’s always ready for action, but she’s not afraid to think through a problem either. And she doesn’t ever wait around for someone else to save her. There’s a lot of satisfaction in writing a character like that.”

“We’re excited to continue our partnership with Dark Horse on a new Lara Croft comic,” said Rich Briggs, Brand Director at Crystal Dynamics. “This globe-trotting series is filled with the dual gun-wielding action and confident flair that nostalgic Lara Croft fans will love. It’s a great companion to the existing Tomb Raider comics, and offers fans another way to go on a high-octane adventure with Lara.”

HELLBOY creator Mike Mignola & acclaimed novelist Christopher Golden Bring JOE GOLEM To Life Again In November 2015
from Bill, June 29th, 2015 10:47 pm, comic book

Joe_Golem

June 29, 2015: This November legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling novelist Christopher Golden and Dark Horse Comics will unleash the first ever comic book appearance of their character Joe Golem from their novel Joe Golem and the Drowning City. A five issue Joe Golem: Occult Detective mini-series will be co-written by frequent collaborators Mignola and Golden, with art by Patric Reynolds (Serenity), colors by award winning colorist Dave Stewart and covers by Spectrum Award-winning painter Dave Palumbo. The new series takes place prior to the events of the illustrated novel Joe Golem and the Drowning City. Set forty years after an earthquake leaves Lower Manhattan partly submerged under 30 feet of water, Joe Golem must hunt a horrifying creature that is pulling children into the depths of the city’s canals.

“For years now, since we first saw Baltimore work as a comic, Chris and I have talked about doing comic book sequels and prequels to Joe Golem,” said Mike Mignola. “But, as always, we needed to find just the right artist and when I saw Patric Reynolds’ recent work on an Alien comic I knew he could pull off the world we created in the novel and capture the mood we were looking for. When you find the right artist for something you don’t want to let him get away.”

Like their collaboration on the Baltimore graphic novels, the events of Joe Golem take place outside of the “Mignolaverse”, the strange, shared universe inhabited by Hellboy, BPRD, Abe Sapien, and Frankenstein Underground. The horror of Joe Golem is distinctly urban; the series offers a haunting dystopian mid-twentieth century New York.

“Joe Golem is full of pulpy goodness, weird alternate history, monsters, and magic and it’s full of insanity you’re not going to find anywhere else.” said Golden. “We’re telling the story of Joe Golem: Occult Detective, solving mysteries in the flooded streets of mid-20th century lower Manhattan with the ancient Simon Church, who’s keeping himself alive with magic and machinery at the same time he’s keeping Joe in the dark about his own origins. We want to immerse you in Joe’s world, what life is like in the Drowning City, and with issue one, we dive right in.”

Mignola and Golden are currently writing BALTIMORE: THE CULT OF THE RED KING, with art by award winning children’s book illustrator Peter Bergting, colors by the award winning Dave Stewart and stunning covers by Ben Stenbeck (FRANKENSTEIN UNDERGROUND). Golden’s most recent novel, TIN MEN, was published by Ballantine Books earlier this month.
